Title: Nutraceuticals and functional ingredients to prevent the early onset of diabetes

Abstract:
Modern nutritional habits prevalent around the world are a modern threat to public health. Excessive intake of saturated fat and refined sugars, which are present in a variety of affordable and palatable foodstuffs, are most probably responsible for the worldwide epidemic of diabetes and obesity. We at the Nutraceuticals Lab have been lately working on the prevention of diet-induced diabetes by focusing on the very early stages in the development of insulin resistance (IR). The seminar will summarize our latest findings concerning the role of fagomine (iminocyclitol, glucose analog) on the promotion of a well-balanced gut microbiota as a means to delay the onset of IR in comparison with the action of prebiotic fiber (inulin, oligofructosaccharides) and resistant starch.
