The ‘language of chemistry’ is the oldest and most widespread form of communication on Earth / iStock.

The chemical ecology is an interdisciplinary research field that seeks to understand and describe chemical mechanisms that underlie the interactions and communications between living organisms. The E-Niche (European Network in Chemical Ecology) consortium seeks to unify the European research teams in this discipline to increase the visibility of their investigations and share knowledge, tools and platforms that help improve the results and contributions of this discipline, mainly concerning sustainability.

This consortium will foster partnerships between scientists from different disciplines that study aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, including chemical, biochemical, biological, microbiological and neurobiological fields, among others, forming an interdisciplinary network whose interactions will generate original ideas and perspectives. This European project involves the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC), the Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC-CSIC), the Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF), the University of Lleida (UdL), the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).
